The first time I saw Bobby Long was on April 22, 2009 at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville, TN. The venue held about 200 people at the time (they’ve since remodeled and doubled in size) I was there with friends to see these guys that truthfully, I’d never heard of. I got a call from a friend saying, “Are you going to see Bobby and Sam (Bradley…of course)?” My response was “Who the hell are Bobby and Sam?” She proceeded to tell me all about them so I said sure. I don’t have anything better to do. So I went and when I got there, imagine my surprise to see a completely packed room. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but seeing a crowd that was 99% women was not it. I spent a lot of that night outside smoking to be honest. I’d never heard these guys and truthfully, although they were talented musicians and Bobby’s voice got me even then, they weren’t really my style. I got dragged back the following night and it was pretty much a repeat of the previous night. Funny thing about it though, those two fairly uneventful nights changed my life. Fast forward 3 years. The Peabody Opera House in St. Louis, MO. A beautiful venue that seats 3,500 people. I was there by choice this time. I sat 26 rows back with my one of my best friends, Tara, who I’ve been to far too many Bobby Long shows with to count. We agreed that this was the farthest we’ve ever been from the stage at a Bobby show. It was fine though. It didn’t matter that we weren’t up front. Bobby came on stage, just him and his guitar, and before you know it, you feel like no matter how many people are in the room, and no matter how big the room is, he’s putting on an intimate show. He demands attention and he sure got it. There was no fanfare, no smoke and lights, just him, his amazing guitar skills, his powerful voice and a presence that just drew the crowd in. This crowd was a hell of a stretch from those first shows. Since Bobby was opening for legend Steve Winwood, his audience this night was a much older crowd. Tara and I felt really fresh and young, not that we were complaining, it just isn’t what we’re used to. The people surrounding us knew good music and by the halfway point of Bobby’s set, these folks seemed to be onboard with us. The reaction he got from the crowd was amazing. Cheers and whoops and hollers, not just from us, rang out around the room. Knowing that I’d be writing a review of this show, I prepared by keeping a set list. I have gone over in my mind several times how to describe this show and I figured just sharing it, song by song with some side notes, will give you the best idea of what the experience was like. He can keep that up, if you ask me! I was unfortunately even farther in the back this time, but it really didn't make much of a difference. Bobby sounded great as usual, playing a pretty standard set. I have to acknowledge how cool it is that he still really puts everything he's go into his songs that he's played so many times. He never disappoints. It was a different, and older crowd than Bobby's last show here and it seemed like there weren't quite as many people there at first. It eventually filled up, though. People just must not have been in any hurry to hear music, because many were even late coming in to see Mr. Winwood! The crowd listened pretty intently to Bobby and by the time he was through playing &quot;Where You Lay&quot; they seemed much more into him. Bobby sure knows how to end a performance&mdash;his usual &quot;Penance Fire Blues&quot; is always enthusiastic and gets an awesome response from the audience! During the show, Bobby talked to the crowd and told some stories. He said he'd wanted to buy a cheese head, but it was too expensive. I can't understand why something made out of foam costs so much, either! When someone asked him where he was from, he joked &quot;Chicago,&quot; which was obviously meant to incite the loud boos from the audience that followed. I can't believe he's been doing this for so long and sounds that good. But I know that if Bobby is still around making music and touring for that long, I'll be there. About half way through the performance we started to smell something...interesting...that could easily be described by the title of Bobby's 3rd song from the night. I've been a fan of Bobby's music for a long time and have made it a tradition that if he's anywhere within driving distance, I have to be there. Mainly cos it's one of the few circumstances where I can woohooo and folks don't look at me like I'm off my rocker. And no, I won't say how many times I've seen him play. Some things are just better left unsaid. We had several hours between his arrival and the time he had to be at the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga (opening for Iron &amp; Wine). Earlier in the week, I had joked with him and told him we were going to take him to &quot;See Rock City&quot; and &quot;See Ruby Falls&quot;. I stopped joking when I had to explain to him that they were old cheesy tourist attractions. It's just no fun when you have to explain that you're being aggravating. Y'all know Bobby is a self described old road dog. He's seen the amazing beauty this country has to offer as well as the largest ball of tinfoil and rooster made from hubcaps. What could we ever show him, in east Tennessee, that would measure up to what he's already experienced? I am NOT accepting responsibility for taking him to the longest indoor flea market! That was all him...and a road side sign telling us to take the next right. Now I'm a seasoned southerner, but I swear I heard banjos as we pulled into the parking lot. As we walked through the doors, I decided I was going to try to see things through his British Yankee eyes but seeing through my own southern ones was unnerving enough. Bobby was a good sport, fearlessly walking from one booth to the next. Did you know you can buy hairless rats at a flea market? Me either! All too soon we made our way to the last of the booths and back to the car. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; We decided to make our way to Point Park on top of Look Out Mountain. Breath taking is the only way I can describe the view. Laura and I hung back at a safe distance from the edge of the rocky cliff while Bobby showed off his mountain goat skills on the rocks. I begged him not to die, figuring a few folks might be ticked at me if he was unavailable to play that night. We took a few pictures and creeped our way back down the steepest mountain road I've ever been on. &nbsp; &nbsp; There's not much about the show I can say that I haven't already said countless times. The sounds he can make come from a guitar are a complete mystery to me. His voice was as raw &amp; raspy as ever...like butter being churned with gravel. That's a compliment, southern style.
