Britischer Singer-Songwriter gab vor Auftritt einen kurzen Charity-Gig im "LOKal"

Catching Up With Bobby Long

"From recording songs in his bedroom to signing with ATO Records to opening for Michael Franti, British singer / songwriter Bobby Long has packed a lot of living into the last two years since his song “Let Me Sign,” co-written with Marcus Foster, landed in the “Twilight” movie soundtrack.

But life could have turned out differently for the musician whose influences range from Irish folk tunes to Bob Dylan. With dreams of becoming a soccer star, Long didn’t pick up the guitar until his late teens, yet his songwriting displays a depth and maturity rarely heard in novice artists.

Long begins a tour opening for Michael Franti Oct. 18 in Lexington, Ky. Currently living in New York City, he recently talked to Pollstar about his influences, his DIY recordings and the making of his first studio album, A Winter's Tale, giving us a glimpse into what it’s like to be an artist on the rise.

Has it seemed that your life has been like a roller coaster ride during the past couple of years; from recording songs in your bedroom and playing London clubs to having a song placed in a major motion picture to recording an album?

Yeah, it has a little bit. I’ve taken in stride. It has been a little chaotic, but in a good way. I haven’t been dragged around or put on exhibition or [gone] against my own will. I always felt in control."   Read more...

Eclipse:  Brooding folk for the Twilight crowd

"All of 24 years old, singer-songwriter Bobby Long owes his recent surge in popularity to about the most modern phenomenon there is. After striking up a friendship with actor and aspiring musician Robert Pattinson through various London open-mike nights, Pattinson performed a song he and Long co-wrote, "Let Me Sign," in 2008's Twilight, which you may have heard of and possibly even seen.

However, Long's tastes go back a little further than Twilight soundtrack stars like Paramore, Band of Skulls and Grizzly Bear. He's fond of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Jeff Buckley, and it shows on the introspective balladry of his albums Dirty Pond Songs and Dangerous Summer Tour. (A new one is in the works.)

Chatter caught up with a sleepy-sounding Long from his hotel room in New York last week. It was a day off, but the weather was so miserable the Wigan native (near Manchester) figured it was going to be a "film day."

Chatter: Are old blues and country records easy to find in England?

Bobby Long: Not really. The market is saturated with a lot of shit, a lot of pop bands. There's a lot of those on the shelf, but you can always go into a secondhand store and some guy will have dropped a George Jones record and you can get it for two pounds."

Top Moments of Mile High Fest

"For those lucky enough to run around the Mile High Music Festival this past weekend at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO, there were certainly some choice moments. Also, there were $1 popsicles at the Whole Foods tent. Trust me, they were necessary. And delicious. In no particular order, here are my ten favorite moments…

British Bred Bobby Long

If he’s not already, Bobby Long will soon be famous. If you don’t believe me just ask, well, everybody that’s heard him. His 1:15pm set on Saturday, though it was early, showcased his honest and humble yet far-reaching songwriting to anybody and everybody that was lucky enough to walk by the “Cougar Stage” (cougars included). He’s been mentioned in the same sentences as Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, even Bob Dylan. And, though I’d be hesitant to go that far just yet, he’s definitely someone to listen to."

On the Rise: Bobby Long at Troubadour

"British singer-songwriter has stepped up from his last Los Angeles appearance at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, recently playing the Troubadour in West Hollywood. And this time, it wasn't solo. Backed by a full band, KGB, Long's already rich material took on new textures with a greater dynamic.

The set included a slow-burn opener in "The Rattle and Roll," followed by one of his best song, "Who Have You Been Loving?"
While inspirations such as Bob Dylan and Van Morrison can be found in his work as he sketches scenes and toys with words, Long isn't derivative in the least. While from the UK, his sound is more Americana, a combination of folk and rock elements, not unlike singer-songwriters of the early '70s."

Concert Preview: Singer Bobby Long is emerging from the 'Twilight' zone

"British singer-songwriter Bobby Long, who got a phenomenal boost when a song he co-wrote was featured in a scene in the 2008 hit movie “Twilight,” is currently on tour in the U.S., playing songs from his upcoming debut studio album, due early next year.

The singer, guitarist and harmonica player, performing tomorrow at El Corazon, got one of those career breaks that most fledgling artists only dream about. While singing at an “open mike” at a London club, Long met Robert Pattinson, who was later chosen for the role of vampire Edward Cullen in “Twilight.” Pattinson ended up singing “Let Me Sign,” written by Long and Marcus Foster, for one of the movie’s key scenes.

Backed by a band for the first time, Long hit the road June 15 in New York City and has been criss-crossing the country doing gigs with and without the band."
