Musician to Know: Bobby Long
|
|
"British singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Long, 24, got his start in music by moving to London and playing as much as he could. From there, he started doing supporting acts and working to create his own name. He finds inspiration for his own music in books, films, and other music, and his songwriting process is forever changing. “Sometimes, I put time aside, and other times, I write every day. The one thing I always try to do is write something every day just to keep moving forward. Recently, I have tried different techniques to keep me on my toes, like whatever I come up with first I keep, and I make up a title first and write to it,” he says. But Long is also a dedicated student of music. In college, he focused his studies on the Social Impact of American Folk Music. He chose this subject because “historically, it was a changing time and some of the music was the first music I heard my dad play.”
What are your three proudest moments as a musician?
"Making my first record, getting to live in New York as a musician, and being able to live off of what I do."
What advice would you give to someone trying to break into the music business?
"I think you definitely have to stick to your morals and not look for an easy route. When you go to sleep at night, all you’re left with are your values and your choices. You also have to work really hard and be prepared to get out and live on the road."
In your opinion, what are the three greatest albums of all time?
"That’s really hard to call. It would probably involve Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles, and in recent times, OK Computer by Radiohead, but I can’t call it."."

Spotlight on Austin City Limits: Bobby Long
|
"Austin City Limits first existed as a showcase for all different sorts of Texan music, so what would an Austin City Limits Spotlight be without some rootsy folk music? Today we’re featuring an ENTIRE Last.fm Discover Studio Session of the talented folk troubadour Bobby Long.
Bobby Long‘s stripped down acoustic melodies are reminiscent of many great American folk singers – he’s drawn comparisons to Ryan Adams and The Felice Brothers - but he is in fact from Manchester, England. Long got his first big break when his song “Let Me Sign” was included on the Twilight soundtrack (the use of it was championed by his good friend and Twilight star Robert Pattinson, who sings backing vocals on the soundtrack version).
Bobby Long is an able guitar player, mixing finger picking and strumming styles to support his poetic lyrics. His words show him to be a conscientious songwriter, “Two Years Old” is a particularly poignant track. Reminiscent of the works by famous British poet Wilfred Owen, it uses England’s participation in world wars as a metaphor to speak of the lasting effects of trauma – “these pain that I have inside is two years old/ these scars that I have inside are more than two years old,” Long sings." Bobby Long and Bombino impress as the Dave Matthews Band Caravan Hits Chicago’s South Side
|
"When the original announcement of the Dave Matthews Band Caravan was made I was intrigued at the prospect of adding another music festival to our already jam packed Chicago summer line up. In addition to our regular venues many of our parks are turned into homes for some great live music. Pitchfork and Lollapalooza have established Chicago as their home, with North Coast as last years newbie, it was not a shock to learn that Chicago was chosen to house DMB’s Caravan, but its location did throw us a curve ball. The site of an old steel mill located on the far South Side, dubbed “Lakeside” is were I and thousands of other’s trekked each day.
[...] Bobby Long was a great way to start the whole fest off on Friday. Coming from over the pond his charming looks, beautifully written songs, and overall stage presence are all components that will surly help make the boy have a long career. At fests I feel it’s always difficult to tell how the crowd is responding because people keep coming and going, each song you must reconnect with a whole new group of people, but Bobby managed to do so and keep many people at his stage while drawing new comers throughout the set. He is the type of person I would love to see at a small intimate venue, but definitely made the most of his surrounding." Read more...
