Member Review: The Peabody Opera House in St. Louis, MO

Thanks to member Zelda for submitting this review of Bobby Long's show supporting Steve Winwood at The Peabody Opera House in St. Louis, MO on Monday, May 14th.

The first time I saw Bobby Long was on April 22, 2009 at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville, TN. The venue held about 200 people at the time (they’ve since remodeled and doubled in size) I was there with friends to see these guys that truthfully, I’d never heard of. I got a call from a friend saying, “Are you going to see Bobby and Sam (Bradley…of course)?” My response was “Who the hell are Bobby and Sam?” She proceeded to tell me all about them so I said sure. I don’t have anything better to do. So I went and when I got there, imagine my surprise to see a completely packed room. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but seeing a crowd that was 99% women was not it. I spent a lot of that night outside smoking to be honest. I’d never heard these guys and truthfully, although they were talented musicians and Bobby’s voice got me even then, they weren’t really my style. I got dragged back the following night and it was pretty much a repeat of the previous night. Funny thing about it though, those two fairly uneventful nights changed my life.

Fast forward 3 years. The Peabody Opera House in St. Louis, MO. A beautiful venue that seats 3,500 people. I was there by choice this time. I sat 26 rows back with my one of my best friends, Tara, who I’ve been to far too many Bobby Long shows with to count. We agreed that this was the farthest we’ve ever been from the stage at a Bobby show. It was fine though. It didn’t matter that we weren’t up front. Bobby came on stage, just him and his guitar, and before you know it, you feel like no matter how many people are in the room, and no matter how big the room is, he’s putting on an intimate show. He demands attention and he sure got it. There was no fanfare, no smoke and lights, just him, his amazing guitar skills, his powerful voice and a presence that just drew the crowd in. This crowd was a hell of a stretch from those first shows. Since Bobby was opening for legend Steve Winwood, his audience this night was a much older crowd. Tara and I felt really fresh and young, not that we were complaining, it just isn’t what we’re used to. The people surrounding us knew good music and by the halfway point of Bobby’s set, these folks seemed to be onboard with us. The reaction he got from the crowd was amazing. Cheers and whoops and hollers, not just from us, rang out around the room.

Knowing that I’d be writing a review of this show, I prepared by keeping a set list. I have gone over in my mind several times how to describe this show and I figured just sharing it, song by song with some side notes, will give you the best idea of what the experience was like. If you’ve seen Bobby, you’ll be able to imagine, if not, then get your butt to a show near you and see what I’m talking about. You won’t be disappointed.

~Who Have You Been Loving (one of my all time Favorite Bobby songs)

~Two Years Old (in which he messed up the lyrics. I told him they were his songs, he could sing them however he wanted…but he messed up my sing along)

~Mumble Mumble Mumble (I know he was telling a witty story about Brian, his tour manager, and something about a wreck that had delayed their trip to St. Louis from Chicago, but I swear, I couldn’t understand a damn word he was saying. Again, if you’ve seen Bobby, you’ll understand. There always seems to be a point where we’re all looking at each other going, “What did he say?”)

~In The Frost (which is always a favorite for me. It’s good for some chair dancing and I’m a chair dancing pro)

~Story about playing a show on mother’s day where someone had suggested that he should dedicate this next song to his mother. He replied that the song was about death, although he dedicated it to her anyway, but clarified that his mom was fine.)

~Where You Lay (during this song the lady next to me asked what his name was and said “He’s pretty good isn’t he?” umm…yeah. He’s pretty good)

~I Will Help You Mend (this is when I called Krissy Jill and put it on speaker phone. It’s her new favorite and I didn’t feel right hearing it without her. This is also a song from his upcoming Album, which I can tell you with certainty, is going to be Amazing!!)

~DEDICATION TO “TARA AND SARAH **Chuckle Chuckle** no, I’m kidding this is for Tara and Laura”. (okay…now this is where the whole story goes south. I’ve been respectful so far in this review but any other time, I have been, and will be, calling Mr. Long, Billy. If he can’t get my name right, I won’t be getting his right either )

~Dead and Done (which made Tara and I both say “Damn, Bobby” He played that song like his life depended on it)

~Shouted Babbling from a girl in the crowd that NO ONE understood. (Bobby said he had no idea what she’d said, but this song is for her)

~Penance Fire Blues (I have no words how good this was. After he was done, people around us were asking who this kid was. He definitely wrapped it up on a high note.)

After the show, Bobby did a meet and greet and signed CD’s for new fans. I don’t know why we were surprised with the ridiculously long line that had formed for him. He was as gracious as ever and spoke with fans and signed their purchases for them. I guess when the new album comes out in September, I may have to queue up for one of those, but for the meantime, we just stood back and enjoyed all the new fans he’d made that night. I did give him the stink eye for his little joke of calling me Sarah…again…and he at least had the decency to look a tiny bit chagrined, although I know he wasn’t. He thinks he’s real funny.

I didn’t jump on the wagon right away, but I have to admit it now, I’m a huge Bobby Long Fan. I have come to appreciate his music and get to know him as a person. He’s a great musician and a really nice guy. I remember the Bobby I saw 3 years ago. He was always good, but seeing him now in these large venues, working the crowd, drawing them in and making fans is just amazing to see. He’s better now and I am so excited to see how much better he can get. My hope is that years from now, I’ll be at a Bobby Long show, with my friends, and he has some kid opening for him and we can look back and say “Remember when Bobby was that kid opening for a Legend and WE were the young faces in the crowd?” And Tara can respond, “Yep. Now hand me my walker, we have to beat the crowd out of here”

Member Review: The Riverside Theater in Milwaukee Revisited

Bobby Long in Support of Steve Winwood
The Riverside Theater, Milwaukee 5/11/12

This was Bobby's second time performing in Milwaukee within a month. He can keep that up, if you ask me! I was unfortunately even farther in the back this time, but it really didn't make much of a difference. Bobby sounded great as usual, playing a pretty standard set. I have to acknowledge how cool it is that he still really puts everything he's go into his songs that he's played so many times. He never disappoints.

It was a different, and older crowd than Bobby's last show here and it seemed like there weren't quite as many people there at first. It eventually filled up, though. People just must not have been in any hurry to hear music, because many were even late coming in to see Mr. Winwood! The crowd listened pretty intently to Bobby and by the time he was through playing "Where You Lay" they seemed much more into him. Bobby sure knows how to end a performance—his usual "Penance Fire Blues" is always enthusiastic and gets an awesome response from the audience!

During the show, Bobby talked to the crowd and told some stories. He said he'd wanted to buy a cheese head, but it was too expensive. I can't understand why something made out of foam costs so much, either! When someone asked him where he was from, he joked "Chicago," which was obviously meant to incite the loud boos from the audience that followed. Bobby dedicated "Where You Lay" to Aaron Rodgers of the Packers and then, "a song about death" to Steve Winwood and his band. He said that he didn't mean anything by that because all of his songs are about death, but he was honored to be there on tour with him.

After Bobby's set, he signed cds for people. I had him sign some BL stickers for my twins, who are a year and a half old, that we're going to put on their little guitars as soon as much husband gets them fixed up. Gotta start them out young! I got to talk to Bobby for a little bit again and he said his poetry book will hopefully be available in about a month. He said his new album should be out around September. He'll be back in Milwaukee at that time (That's great, as long as it's not the last weekend of Sept. during my sister's wedding!!!). I'm not sure when or where the tour starts, but he commented he'll probably have another year of touring.

As for the headliner, Steve was excellent. I can't believe he's been doing this for so long and sounds that good. But I know that if Bobby is still around making music and touring for that long, I'll be there. About half way through the performance we started to smell something...interesting...that could easily be described by the title of Bobby's 3rd song from the night. I guess that's what happens when your seats are way up on the second level in the back at a concert of a guy that was really popular in the 60s & 70s!

The Riverside Theater Set List:
1. Who Have You Been Loving
2. Two Years Old
3. The Bounty of Mary Jane
4. In the Frost
5. Where You Lay
6. Dead and Done
7. Penance Fire Blues

Bobby Long Road Trips with Krissy Jill...Plus One

So my friend Laura and I the had opportunity to take a fast & furious road trip with Bobby for his Chattanooga show last weekend. I've been a fan of Bobby's music for a long time and have made it a tradition that if he's anywhere within driving distance, I have to be there. Mainly cos it's one of the few circumstances where I can woohooo and folks don't look at me like I'm off my rocker. And no, I won't say how many times I've seen him play. Some things are just better left unsaid.

We had several hours between his arrival and the time he had to be at the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga (opening for Iron & Wine). Earlier in the week, I had joked with him and told him we were going to take him to "See Rock City" and "See Ruby Falls". I stopped joking when I had to explain to him that they were old cheesy tourist attractions. It's just no fun when you have to explain that you're being aggravating. Y'all know Bobby is a self described old road dog. He's seen the amazing beauty this country has to offer as well as the largest ball of tinfoil and rooster made from hubcaps. What could we ever show him, in east Tennessee, that would measure up to what he's already experienced? I am NOT accepting responsibility for taking him to the longest indoor flea market! That was all him...and a road side sign telling us to take the next right. Now I'm a seasoned southerner, but I swear I heard banjos as we pulled into the parking lot. As we walked through the doors, I decided I was going to try to see things through his British Yankee eyes but seeing through my own southern ones was unnerving enough. Bobby was a good sport, fearlessly walking from one booth to the next. Did you know you can buy hairless rats at a flea market? Me either! All too soon we made our way to the last of the booths and back to the car.

We decided to make our way to Point Park on top of Look Out Mountain. Breath taking is the only way I can describe the view. Laura and I hung back at a safe distance from the edge of the rocky cliff while Bobby showed off his mountain goat skills on the rocks. I begged him not to die, figuring a few folks might be ticked at me if he was unavailable to play that night. We took a few pictures and creeped our way back down the steepest mountain road I've ever been on.

There's not much about the show I can say that I haven't already said countless times. The sounds he can make come from a guitar are a complete mystery to me. His voice was as raw & raspy as ever...like butter being churned with gravel. That's a compliment, southern style. He engaged the crowd and told stories in typical Bobby style. The telling of the drunk man on his early morning flight had the crowd cracking up. The girl next to Laura started asking her questions about him. Penance Fire Blues, Bounty of Mary Jane, These Boats, Dead & Done, In The Frost all made appearances in his too short 45 minute set. He did a meet & greet after and I was tickled to see a long line and an empty CD table when he was done.

During our drive, Bobby played about ten of the finished tracks from his upcoming CD. Incredible. Y'all, usually I'm pretty good about waiting for things...it's gonna be tough waiting for this release! Incredible. The overall tone of the album is way more rock than what we're used to hearing from him and I loved it! Incredible. We're all gonna be dancing! I believe this compilation is going to open up a lot of new doors for him. I thought I was going to have to pull over before "I Will Help You Mend" was finished. Incredible. The emotion he brings on all of the tracks is so real and honest. Incredible is my favorite word to describe it. Sadly, I have no news on a release date. He said it still has to be mastered and will sound better once it is...I don't see how it could.

Bobby does plan to tour this summer and fall...and I'm guessing winter, too. No information on any dates other than the Steve Winwood ones that are already posted. Keep watching though cos as soon as we know, y'all will know. Maybe his book will be out soon and we can scour its pages while we wait for him to announce his schedule.

Bobby Long to Support

From Steve Winwood's website:

April 17, 2012

It's been announced today that the British singer-songwriter Bobby Long will open a handful of shows for the upcoming Steve Winwood US tour. The dates are Minneapolis, St Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Portsmouth, New York, Atlantic City, Westbury, Red Bank, Vienna, Philadelphia, Canandaigua & Boston.

The British singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Long's anticipated debut studio album A WINTER TALE, produced by Grammy-winner Liam Watson (White Stripes) will be released February 1st, 2011 on ATO Records. Currently residing in New York City, the 24-year old Long has been writing finely-crafted songs since taking up the guitar at age 17; from then on he’s been creating memorable songs inhabited by hauntingly poetic lyrics. After relocating to London from Wiltshire in the countryside of South West England, he became a fixture at London’s open-mic nights while attending London Metropolitan University where he studied Music in Film and wrote his thesis on The Social Impact of American Folk Music.

Bobby quickly established himself on the local open mic circuit, finding his voice and beginning to develop songs characterized by catchy melodies paired with elusive, imaginative lyrics. As Long became more entrenched in London's burgeoning open mic circuit, he met actor and fellow musician Robert Pattinson, who would go on to sing "Let Me Sign" (co-written by Long and friend Marcus Foster) over a crucial dramatic scene in the blockbuster film Twilight. The inclusion of the song in the film’s soundtrack gave Long a head start on a legion of fans. It is Bobby Long's intensely personal songs, vocal prowess, and heart-wrenching soulfulness that resonate with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, creating a loyal following through constant touring over the past two years. In 2009, Long played 160 shows in seven months in seven countries.

A WINTER TALE merges band power with acoustic rawness, featuring Nona Hendryx (LaBelle) on backing vocals on "Penance Fire Blues," B. J. Cole (Elton John, Sting) on pedal steel, Icelandic singer Lay Low on several tracks, and other top-drawer musicians. And by way of continued extensive touring, Bobby Long will be bringing A WINTER TALE and what has been called his "tapestry of tales" to the ever-growing audiences seduced by his compelling voice, musicianship and charm.

**UPDATE - it has been confirmed that Bobby will be providing support at the Milwaukee, WI show, but NOT providing support on 6/1 and 6/2 at the Canandaigua and Boston shows. The MBL Team
