Member Review: The Riverside Theater in Milwaukee Revisited

Bobby Long in Support of Steve Winwood
The Riverside Theater, Milwaukee 5/11/12

This was Bobby's second time performing in Milwaukee within a month. He can keep that up, if you ask me! I was unfortunately even farther in the back this time, but it really didn't make much of a difference. Bobby sounded great as usual, playing a pretty standard set. I have to acknowledge how cool it is that he still really puts everything he's go into his songs that he's played so many times. He never disappoints.

It was a different, and older crowd than Bobby's last show here and it seemed like there weren't quite as many people there at first. It eventually filled up, though. People just must not have been in any hurry to hear music, because many were even late coming in to see Mr. Winwood! The crowd listened pretty intently to Bobby and by the time he was through playing "Where You Lay" they seemed much more into him. Bobby sure knows how to end a performance—his usual "Penance Fire Blues" is always enthusiastic and gets an awesome response from the audience!

During the show, Bobby talked to the crowd and told some stories. He said he'd wanted to buy a cheese head, but it was too expensive. I can't understand why something made out of foam costs so much, either! When someone asked him where he was from, he joked "Chicago," which was obviously meant to incite the loud boos from the audience that followed. Bobby dedicated "Where You Lay" to Aaron Rodgers of the Packers and then, "a song about death" to Steve Winwood and his band. He said that he didn't mean anything by that because all of his songs are about death, but he was honored to be there on tour with him.

After Bobby's set, he signed cds for people. I had him sign some BL stickers for my twins, who are a year and a half old, that we're going to put on their little guitars as soon as much husband gets them fixed up. Gotta start them out young! I got to talk to Bobby for a little bit again and he said his poetry book will hopefully be available in about a month. He said his new album should be out around September. He'll be back in Milwaukee at that time (That's great, as long as it's not the last weekend of Sept. during my sister's wedding!!!). I'm not sure when or where the tour starts, but he commented he'll probably have another year of touring.

As for the headliner, Steve was excellent. I can't believe he's been doing this for so long and sounds that good. But I know that if Bobby is still around making music and touring for that long, I'll be there. About half way through the performance we started to smell something...interesting...that could easily be described by the title of Bobby's 3rd song from the night. I guess that's what happens when your seats are way up on the second level in the back at a concert of a guy that was really popular in the 60s & 70s!

The Riverside Theater Set List:
1. Who Have You Been Loving
2. Two Years Old
3. The Bounty of Mary Jane
4. In the Frost
5. Where You Lay
6. Dead and Done
7. Penance Fire Blues

Great review. Thank you. You're really lucky because of having the chance to see Bobby live twice in 4 weeks. Seems like we will have to wait a little longer for this pleasure here on the other side of the pond but for sure it will be worth all waiting.
Thanks! As lucky as I have been, seeing him twice this year already, I'm doing to be so depressed if he comes back here next time when I can't go. I still haven't ever gotten to see him with a band.
Here are some professional photos from this show, replace the (dot)s with ".": www(dot)facebook(dot)com/?ref=tn_tnmn#!/media/set/?set=a.10150767266930426.387482.26107765425&type=3
Amazing photos and a really impressive venue. Must be very exciting for him to play in front of such a big audience ... but the stage and the boy are soooo far away. Maybe I would prefer to see him at the smaller places ... but at last I guess we don't care about the venue if we have the chance to see him play live. I would also like to see him with a band ... maybe on his next German tour.
BTW ... nice new profil picture
thanks so much for the review! crossing my finger that the tours starts a bit before the album is released, so i can see him. xx

    • Bobby - we miss you in St Louis! Please come back!

    • Seen you in concert in Philly last week and you were amazing. I brought my husband with me and I'm proud To say you have a new fan. Thanks for a great night and I. Hope to see you again in the future. And by the way the new cd is great !!!

    • Heard you on the RADIO today in NY for the first time on 107.1 the peak. Have been waiting to hear that since I first listened to you! Congrats!!

    • Unacceptable! Bobby Long and Marcus Foster are playing in my city on the same night at different venues. This is a huge personal conundrum and IDK what to do! Who can I get to fix this?

    • We're still looking for something in the southwest! California to Colorado to Texas -- Since we know you're not likely to make it through our fair city--we know we'll have to travel to make it to a concert. It takes time to make plans and get time off work.........Please give us some dates soon!

    • Bobby, Bob, Bobert, Dude!! You have like a week left over there...it's time to release those US dates. I've been more than patient ~ spill! x

    • Bobby!!! With the release of Wishbone this coming year, I think that you need to bring you and your music to Canada. Although, you have performed in a few cities in the past... You were nowhere near us (my friends and I)

Do you know when new tour dates are being planned?

      Xo. Mandy

    • I like all the choices for your Christmas song this year and I love the River by Joni Mitchell but it's really a sad song, so for that reason I have to go with I'll Be Home For Christmas

    • Merry Christmas Baby!

    • A few Christmas songs I would love to hear you sing "Blue Christmas" "O Holy Night" Rockin Around The Christmas Tree" and "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire"
