Bobby Long brings his brand of Americana to The Loft

Bobby Long is a 29-year-old singer-songwriter who found his way to the United States about a half-decade ago, moving to New York City from Wiltshire, England. Upon moving here he found his song "Let Me Sign" featured in the film "Twilight" where it was covered by actor Robert Pattinson. After that good fortune, he signed with ATO records where he's been ever since.
Long will make what very well could be his debut Granite State performance when he takes the stage at The Music Hall Loft on Friday, March 27. The Herald caught up with Long to chat about the upcoming gig, how he approaches the task of penning tunes, and his admiration for New Hampshire's own Robert Frost.

Herald: Let's talk about the new album "Ode to Thinking." I love the title. Please expand upon its meaning if you don't mind. What are folks in for when they tune in?
Long: I think it just stems from me having more of an interest in the way the world works. I'm finding that I'm becoming more appreciative and frustrated every day. I find solace in the wonders of science and nature and empathy with those in need and those helping those in need. However, I am also finding a lack of understanding from those who boldly follow myth and the words of others who wish to manipulate. It's just part of my growth to remind myself and pay homage to educating myself.
Herald: Why music? Was there a moment or experience that led you to chase this mode of communication as a means of making a living?
Long: I think being exposed to great songs when I was a kid. Every moment of fun and meaningfulness had an album or song playing in the background as its soundtrack. I think so much of my life has been surrounded by music, so it was only ever going to be this or play soccer.
Herald: You're living in New York City by way of Wiltshire, England. How do the two compare? How do both geographic locales inform your music?
Long: They don't. One is like Tolkien's "The Shire." A very old place with bright greens and ancient hills and the other is the greatest city in the world. I used to really dislike spending my childhood in Wiltshire, but I just went back, and it was so beautiful. I had felt like I had been walking around eyes closed and only saw that it was miles away from life. Now I just tell people that it's a pretty little place that's nice to go back to.
Herald: I like your philosophy of honing a song by road testing it and getting it in front of an audience a handful of times before recording it, while walking the fine line of making sure you don't overplay it or overthink it, or else it will lose some of the magic that got you excited about the tune initially. With that said, how do you know a song is ready?
Long: I find I am always underplaying and overplaying songs. I also feel like I am a terrible judge of my own stuff so I am still figuring it all out. I think it's part of your job as a performer to re-engage within the song and find something whether it's performing or recording. Sometimes it's really easy and sometimes you have to ring its neck. Or I just won't play or record it. It's all part of some journey that the songs undertake.
Herald: Have you seen Nick Cave's film "20,000 Days on Earth"? One of the main themes is the idea of contemplating one's own legacy and if what they've contributed during their lifetime will matter and carry on after death. You're still pretty young and have a majority of your career in front of you. Is legacy something you think about as you pen your tunes?
Long: Not really. I do feel really fortunate to be making something that will forever be floating in the digital world. Family 200 years in the future will be able to see me and hear me. I wish I were able to see my great, great-grandparents who were musicians. I think it would be really inspiring and I would definitely perform some of their songs. But aside from that, it's not something I really think about.

Bobby Long Brainstorms Back to His Acoustic Roots

Posted March 25, 2015

With the forthcoming “Ode to Thinking,” recorded during a two-week period last fall at Hallman’s Congress House Studios in Austin, Bobby Long returns to his musical roots — something he describes simply as “a guy and his guitar.” The collection of 11 original songs suggests the intimacy of his live shows, while the subject matter reflects a more philosophical exploration of life.

“It’s not political, though,” said Long, who will play The Music Hall Loft in Portsmouth Friday night. “It’s more a reference to getting a little bit older and taking more of an interest in my surroundings. I found myself writing songs about things that frustrate me in society and our culture ... It’s more about my personal journey and taking more consideration about what’s happening around me and abroad.”

As for how this album musically differs from his previous work, he noted it is completely acoustic as opposed to the more rock-oriented “Wishbone” and its electric sound or “A Winter’s Tale,” which featured a mixture of electric and acoustic fare.

“It’s more song-based, Long said of “Ode to Thinking.” “It’s inspired by singer-songwriters like Randy Newman and others.

“The songwriting

process is pretty quick for me,” he added. “The lyrics and music are instantaneous for me. I either get it or I don’t.”
